I’ve got a 2004 Sprinter with a 200Ah LiFePO4 house battery that I built myself. It’s a solid system. But last September, during a three-day grid failure in Salida, I realized my van battery was doing exactly nothing for my house. The Winner

Anker SOLIX C1000. I didn’t expect to like this one as much as I did. I’ve tested the bigger S2000 and loved it, but that’s a 36-pound 2kWh unit. The C1000 is 1,056Wh, weighs about 26 pounds, and fits under the bench seat in my Sprinter without me having to rearrange my entire tool drawer.

I ran a constant 500W load on it for a discharge test. It delivered 1,020Wh before cutoff. That’s a 96.5% efficiency rate, which is within my tolerance of at least 90% of claimed capacity. The fan didn’t kick on until I pushed it past 700W, and even then it was a whisper compared to the EcoFlow’s turbine. In the van, with the fridge drawing about 45W average, I got 21 hours of runtime. That’s a full weekend of cold beer and charged phones without breaking a sweat.

The app is the best in this class. I can set charge limits at 80% or 90%, which extends cell life, something I recommend to every solar client. I can schedule charging during off-peak hours. BLUETTI AC180. At $479, this is the budget pick that doesn’t feel like a budget pick. It’s 1,152Wh, slightly bigger than the Anker, and it delivered 1,080Wh on my discharge test. That’s a 93.7% efficiency rate. Not bad at all for the price.

It’s heavier than the Anker at 35 pounds, but that’s still manageable for a one-handed carry from the van to the campsite table. The AC output is 1,800W, which is more than enough for a fridge, a coffee maker, and a laptop charger simultaneously. I ran my fridge, a 600W induction cooktop, and a phone charger for 30 minutes without tripping the inverter. The pass-through mode works as advertised: outputs stay live when AC is connected, and the battery kicks in seamlessly if input drops.

But there are compromises. The app is basic at best. No charge limits, no energy tracking, no scheduling. You get a battery percentage and a few toggles. And the LCD panel on the unit itself is clunky to navigate. I had to read the manual twice to figure out how to change the charging speed. That’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s a reminder that you’re paying less for a reason.

What to Look For

Capacity, measured in watt-hours, not “peak power.” I see people buy a station with 1,500W peak output and think it’s a 1,500Wh battery. It’s not. You need at least 1,000Wh to run a 12V fridge for 20 hours. I’ve tested units that claimed 1,000Wh and delivered 850. Trust the discharge test, not the marketing. Look for at least 90% of claimed capacity delivered on a constant load test.

Weight and form factor. A 26-pound unit is a one-handed carry. A 35-pound unit is a two-handed carry. A 77-pound unit needs wheels. Know what you’re buying. For van life, I’d stay under 40 pounds unless you’re building a permanent install. My Sprinter has a slide-out tray, but if you’re moving the unit between the van and the house, weight matters more than capacity.

App reliability, not app features. Every brand has an app. Very few have apps that work consistently. I’ve had the Jackery app hang and show me a stale battery percentage during an outage. That’s dangerous. Before you buy, read the reviews for app complaints. If you see a pattern of “app won’t connect” or “app shows wrong info,” walk away. A station with a buggy app is a station with a broken UI, no matter how good the cells are.

Solar input flexibility. If you’re planning to charge from panels, check the input voltage range and connector type. Proprietary daisy-chain connectors are a tax on people who don’t read the spec sheet. Standard MC4 or Anderson connectors are the way to go. And understand that solar is a top-off, not a full recharge. In Colorado winter sun, I get about 100W per 200W panel. That’s enough to offset drain, not to charge from empty in a day.

Can I run a 12V fridge directly from the 12V output? Yes, but check the amp rating. Most stations have a 10A cigarette lighter port, which is fine for a 45W fridge. But if you have a larger fridge that draws 100W, you’ll want to use the Anderson port or the AC output. I’ve seen people blow the fuse on the 12V port by overloading it. Read the spec sheet.

How long will the battery last if I use it every weekend? LiFePO4 cells are rated for 3,000 to 5,000 cycles. That’s roughly 8 to 13 years of weekly use. But the BMS is the weak point. If you run the battery to zero repeatedly, or charge it in extreme heat, the BMS can fail before the cells do. Set charge limits at 80% and discharge limits at 20% and you’ll extend the life significantly. My logbook shows a 15% capacity loss after 400 cycles on a unit I didn’t baby. The one I protected is still at 98%.

Can I charge from my van’s alternator while driving? Yes, if the station supports DC input. The Anker C1000 and the EcoFlow DELTA 2 both accept 12V/24V input. But the charge rate is limited, usually around 100W. That’s fine for topping off, but don’t expect a full recharge from a 4-hour drive. I use a 200W solar panel on my roof rack for that.

Is a power station worth it if I already have a van battery? It depends on your setup. If you have a properly sized house battery with solar, you might not need a portable station. But if your van battery is small, or you want a backup that can move between the van and the house, a portable station is a good investment. I use mine as a UPS for my home office when the grid flickers, and it goes in the van for weekend trips. It’s redundancy, and that’s never a bad thing.

Skip the Goal Zero unless you find a screaming deal on a used unit.
