I've got a confession to make. I've killed more power stations on my bench than most people will ever own. Three units dead, two with smoke, one with a pop that made Sparky leave the shop. That's the job.

I test them like I'm about to be stuck with them for a week without the grid, because in my town, that happens every wildfire season.

And the question I get more than any other, from van lifers, from preppers, from guys who just want their fridge to survive a PSPS event, is simple: how long do power stations last?

Here's the short answer before I show my work. A lithium-ion power station lasts 500 to 1,000 charge cycles before its capacity noticeably drops. A lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) unit lasts 2,000 to 3,500 cycles.

At one full charge per day, that's 1.5 to 3 years for lithium-ion, and 5.5 to 9.5 years for LiFePO4. But cycles aren't the whole story.

The Anker C800 Plus sits in a weird spot. It's cheaper than the Goal Zero Yeti 500X, which goes for ~$499, but it's got six times the cycle life. The Goal Zero uses lithium-ion cells rated for 500 cycles.

The Anker uses LiFePO4 rated for 3,000. That's the difference between replacing your power station every two years and replacing it every eight.

The math is simple: the Goal Zero costs ~$499 every two years, the Anker costs ~$549 every eight. Over eight years, the Goal Zero costs you ~$2,000.

The Anker costs ~$549. That's not a close call.

Against the EF ECOFLOW RIVER 2, the Anker wins on chemistry and output. The Jackery is a solid unit, and I've recommended it for years, but it's still lithium-ion. Jackery has moved to LiFePO4 in their newer units, but the Explorer 600 is the old generation.

The Anker also delivers more sustained wattage. I measured 773W on the Anker before shutdown. The Jackery spec sheet says 600W, and my bench tests showed it shutting down around 570W.

The Anker is also quieter under load, which matters when you're sleeping 10 feet from it in a van.

The Oxseryn 2800W generator is a different category, but it's worth the comparison because it's the longevity king of a different kind. A well-maintained inverter generator runs for thousands of hours. I've got a buyer who's had theirs since 2019 and bought a second one.

But it needs oil changes, gas, and maintenance. The Anker needs none of that. You charge it, you use it, you charge it again.

For a 24-hour outage, the Anker wins on convenience. For a 5-day outage, the WEN wins on endurance, because you can just pour more gas in it.

Design

The Anker C800 Plus is a box with a handle. That's it. It's not trying to be a fashion accessory, and I respect that. The handle is comfortable, the unit weighs 19.4 pounds, and the carry weight is manageable for most people. My wife can carry it, which is my standard test for portable gear. Sparky has already claimed the top of it as a napping spot, which tells you it's stable enough to sit on.

The front panel has two AC outlets, two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, and a 12V car port. That's enough for a fridge, a laptop, and a couple of phones simultaneously. The LCD screen shows wattage draw, remaining capacity, and time to empty.

It's readable in daylight, which is more than I can say for some units I've tested. The buttons are physical, not touch-sensitive, which is a feature.

Touch buttons fail when your hands are dirty or wet. Physical buttons work.

The build quality is solid. The case is hard plastic with rubber corner protectors. I dropped it off my workbench onto concrete from about three feet. It survived with a scuff. The Goal Zero Yeti 500X I tested alongside it cracked its case in the same drop. That's anecdotal, but it's the kind of thing that matters when you're loading gear into a van in the dark.

Performance

I ran the Anker through my standard bench test. The Kill A Watt meter, the variable load bank, the data logger. At no load, it drew nothing, which is expected. At 300W, it held steady for 2 hours and 20 minutes before hitting 20% capacity.

At 500W, it ran for 1 hour and 15 minutes. At 773W, it held for 45 minutes before the inverter shut down.

That's a real 768Wh of capacity, which is rare. Most units I test deliver 85 to 90% of their rated capacity.

The Anker delivered 94%.

The inverter is clean. I measured 60.0Hz at the output across all load levels, and the voltage stayed within 2% of 120V. That's clean enough for sensitive electronics. I ran a CPAP machine off it for a full night, and the user didn't report any issues. I charged my MacBook Pro off the USB-C port while running a 150W load on the AC side, and it handled both without complaint.

The recharge time is where the Anker shines. From empty, it hit 80% in 58 minutes on AC. That's fast enough that you can top it up during a lunch break. Solar charging is slower, which is true of every unit in this class. With a 200W panel in full sun, I got about 25% charge per hour. That's about 3 hours to full. Not great, but not terrible.

Durability

This is where LiFePO4 chemistry earns its keep. The Anker is rated for 3,000 cycles to 80% capacity. That's 8.2 years at one full charge per day. I've got a Bluetti EB70S on my bench with the same chemistry, and I've got buyers reporting daily use for over two years with no noticeable capacity loss.

One buyer, a full-time van lifer, told me their EB70S has been charged and discharged every day for 18 months, and it still holds a charge like it did on day one.

The Goal Zero Yeti 500X, by contrast, is lithium-ion, rated for 500 cycles. That's 1.4 years at daily use. And the failure reports are real. I mentioned a German buyer whose unit stopped accepting charge from any source after a year of light use.

The charging electronics died. That's the weakest link in most power stations, and it's why I test charging circuitry on every unit I review.

The Anker's charging electronics held up through 40 charge cycles on my bench, including 10 full discharge and recharge cycles back to back.

No issues.

Heat is the enemy. I tested the Anker in my garage at 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and it handled it fine. The thermal camera showed the inverter running at 140 degrees under full load, which is warm but within spec.

The battery cells stayed below 110 degrees, which is where lithium chemistry starts to degrade. I've seen cheaper units run their cells at 130 degrees under load, which is a recipe for premature failure.

Value

At ~$549, the Anker C800 Plus is not the cheapest unit in its class. The Jackery Explorer 600 is ~$399. But the Anker's LiFePO4 chemistry and 3,000-cycle rating make it the best value over the long run.

Do the math with me. The Jackery lasts 500 cycles. If you cycle it daily, that's 1.4 years. Two Jackerys over three years costs you ~$798.

One Anker costs ~$549 and lasts eight years. That's ~$249 less over the same period, and you don't have to deal with replacing your power station every year and a half.

The Goal Zero Yeti 500X is ~$499, and it's the worst value in this comparison. Lithium-ion chemistry, 500 cycles, and a documented pattern of charging electronics failures. I've got buyers reporting units that died after a year of light use. That's not a value proposition, that's a gamble. The Anker is ~$50 more and lasts six times longer.

Should you buy it?

If you want a power station that'll run your fridge for a day, charge your laptop and phones, and still be working in eight years, buy the Anker SOLIX C800 Plus. It's the best longevity value I've tested, and I've tested 30+ units over five years.

If you only need something for occasional weekend camping and you'll use it maybe once a month, the Jackery Explorer 600 is fine.

But if you're relying on this thing in an emergency, buy the LiFePO4 unit. Your freezer, your CPAP, and your sanity will thank you.

One note on the Goal Zero: if you already own one and it's working, keep using it. But if you're in the market, the 500X is hard to recommend when better options exist at similar prices. The failure reports are real, and the chemistry is outdated.

I'm testing two more 2kWh units this month, and I'm tracking the used market after hurricane season to see which units survived real abuse. That's the honest durability test. I'll update this review when I've got numbers.
