How I tested

If you're going to buy a battery station, buy one with a real MPPT charge controller, a warranty that actually covers the battery, and enough capacity to run something more than your phone.

Honda EU2200i: The Benchmark

It's not a Honda. That's the sentence I hear from every WEN owner who's also owned a Honda. The Honda EU2200i costs three to four times as much, and it earns every dollar in fit and finish. It starts easier, runs smoother, and holds its resale value better than anything else in this category.

But here's the thing. The WEN has "exceeded my expectations in every way" according to one buyer who's also owned Hondas. It's harder to start, requires more choke finesse, and won't deliver more than about 1650 watts. But at $350 versus $1,300, you can buy three WENs and still have money left over.

If you're a professional who runs a generator every day, buy the Honda. If you're a homeowner who needs backup power for outages and the occasional camping trip, the WEN is the better value. That's not a cop-out. That's the reality of the technology.

What else to consider

The budget pick: The Wen 56200i is a smaller version of the 2000W, cheaper and lighter, but you give up real power. Fine for charging devices and running a CPAP, nothing more.

The storage king: The Jackery Explorer 500 is a solid battery station with a proven track record, but it lacks MPPT on some models and the proprietary connectors are a pain. If I can't replace a cable with a standard one, I'm not buying it.

The big battery: The EcoFlow Delta 2 has more capacity and faster charging than the Yeti, but it's also more expensive and the app can be buggy. The brands that ship buggy apps this year will lose the mid-market by next spring.

Skip it if you need power for more than 24 hours. A generator gives you unlimited run time as long as you've got fuel. A battery gives you maybe 500Wh of capacity, which means you're getting maybe 2-3 hours of real appliance use before it's dead. And then you've got to charge it, which takes hours.

Should you buy the Honda EU2200i?

Buy it if you're a professional who runs a generator every day, or if you want the best resale value in the category. It's the gold standard for a reason.
