How I Tested

I don't do first impressions. I ran the WEN through a full break-in cycle, changed the oil at 8 hours, and logged every load on my data logger. But there's a US buyer who got a European electrical standard unit and then got refused a return. That's a nightmare scenario. You order gear, it shows up wrong, and the seller treats you like you're the problem. If that happened to me, that unit would be sitting in my garage too.

At ~$500+, it faces serious competition from newer brands at lower prices. If you're buying one, buy from a seller with a solid return policy and test it immediately. Don't let it sit in a box for six months. By the time you need it, it might not work, and you'll be past the return window.

This is the first tool I reach for on any bench test. It's a plug-in meter that measures voltage, amperage, and wattage. It costs ~$25, and it will tell you exactly what your fridge draws, what your TV draws, and what your phone charger draws. I've had mine for years and it's still accurate.

Here's how you use it. Plug it into the wall, plug your appliance into it, and read the wattage. Do this for everything you might want to run during an outage. Add it up. That's your number. My fridge draws 45 watts running.

My LED lights draw 10 watts. My laptop charger draws 60 watts. My CPAP draws 30 watts. Total: 145 watts.

A 500Wh power station runs that for over three hours. A generator runs it indefinitely.

How to Calculate Your Own Number

The 80% rule applies here. Never run a generator or power station at more than 80% of rated load for sustained periods. So if you need 1,500 watts, you want a unit rated for at least 1,875 watts. The WEN's 2,000-watt rating gives you a 1,600-watt sustained ceiling, which is just barely enough for a fridge, lights, and a heater. It's cutting it close.

For power stations, the math is about watt-hours, not watts. A 500Wh unit gives you 400 usable watt-hours at the 80% rule. My fridge draws 45 watts, so that's about 9 hours.
